FEMA:
Makerere
University Faculty of Economics and Management (FEMA) grew out of
the Makerere University Institute of Economics (MUIE) which evolved
out of the Department of Economics, formerly in the Faculty of
Social Sciences until the academic year 1999/00. MUIE was elevated
to a faculty status in October 2004. The Faculty of Economics and
Management is comprised of five departments; Department of Economic
Theory and Analysis, Department of Development Economics, Department
of Economic Policy and Planning, Department of Finance and
Accounting and Department of Marketing and Management. The faculty
is mandated to teach Economics, Business and Management courses in
Makerere University as well as carrying out research.

The vision of the Faculty is “For better economic and business
management”
Mission:
The mission of the Faculty is to endeavour to develop human capital
equipped with skills in economic analysis and management for
sustainable development. The Faculty seeks to provide high quality
training in Economics, Commerce, Management, Banking, Finance, and
Business administration for a strong and diversified economy, and to
be a center for high quality research on Economic, Trade,
Management, Banking, Finance, and Business administration issues
that focus on individual, national and international growth and
development.
Objectives of the Faculty
In pursuing its mission, the Faculty strives to achieve the
following objectives:
i) To provide academic and professional support in economics and
management to all Schools, Faculties and Institutes of the
University, and to train economists for Makerere University Staff
needs, as well as for the Private Sector, Government, and NGOs, at
Bachelors, Masters and Ph.D. levels;
ii) To develop new courses and programmes in economics and
management to meet the ever-changing needs of society;
iii) To up-grade the skills and standards of practicing economists
and managers by developing and offering short-term professional
courses tailored to the needs of the private and public sectors;
iv) To provide relevant and professional business and management
education for the private and public sectors; and
v) To undertake and enhance the quality of basic and applied
research in economics and management.
In the endeavor to realize the above vision and mission, and also
achieve the given objectives, FEMA is committed to:
i) Academic excellence in the development and teaching of economics,
business and management;
ii) Enhancing the image of Makerere University as a responsible
institution of excellence, and as organization committed to
improving the quality of life of all the peoples of Uganda; and
iii) Achieving a leadership position as the nation’s most important
provider of economics and management education.
